Identity design for piña, a Mexican bar and taqueria in Sheffield, UK.
The identity seeks to merge the cultures of both Mexico and Sheffield. The primary colour, Steel Blue, acknowledges Sheffield's renowned association with the steel industry, whilst also referencing the natural colouration of the Weber Azul which is the specific cultivator of the Agave Tequilana that is exclusively used in the distillation of tequila. During this process the heart of the plant, the piña, is removed, heated, fermented and finally distilled.
Further references include the secondary colour palette that is evocative of Mexican visual culture and the supporting typeface that alludes to the Grotesque typefaces produced by Sheffield-based Stephenson Blake in the late nineteenth century, one of Britain's last active type foundries.
